Key Information
We are delighted to be working with your children and are looking forward to all the wonderful things we will be learning together. The children are in for an exciting year in Year 1.
Please feel free to speak to any member of the Year 1 team if you have any questions or queries or contact us via the office. Alternatively, use the messaging section on Class Dojo to contact your child's class teacher. Here you will be able to receive messages from your teacher, see when your child receives Dojo rewards and stay in touch.
Keep checking our class page for updates.
A newsletter will be coming out at the end of this week along with an autumn term homework grid full of fun things to do over the term with your child to earn extra Dojos and House Points. Visit the school class page for more information.
PE is on Wednesday and, we ask the children to come to school in their PE kit on that day. Earrings should be taken out or taped on PE days.
Forest School will be on Thursday alternate weeks so, each class gets a longer session once a fortnight.
1SH first session is Thursday 9th January 2025.
1HK first session is Thursday 16th January 2025.
Reading
We believe that every child can become a fluent reader, which is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised.
In Year 1, your child will build upon the phonetic knowledge they developed in the Foundation Stage and master essential phonic strategies to support their reading journey. This learning is delivered through:
- Daily engaging phonics sessions, tailored to develop their decoding skills.
- Reading practice sessions, using matched decodable books aligned with their current phonic knowledge.
To support this learning, each week children will bring home GPCs, tricky words, and decodable words they have been practising in school. These focus areas will be highlighted inside their reading diaries to make practising at home easy and effective.
We encourage you to read with your child regularly—at least three times per week—to help develop their confidence, fluency, and comprehension. Please remember to initial and date your child's reading journal each time you read together.
Your support at home plays a crucial role in your child's reading success. Thank you for working with us to foster a love of reading and learning!
Many thanks,
The Year 1 Team
